Ok, so all I can say about Hot Dub is that it was amazing. The music: amazing. The DJ: amazing. The crowd: Ah-maz-ing. In my honest opinion this was one of the best nights so far at the Union, which is difficult to say considering Freshers’ week went so well this year.
Hot Dub has a big reputation to live up to, but this year they completely managed it and more.
For those who don’t know about Hot Dub Time Machine, you really must have been living under a rock. Or maybe you’re just a fresher – which we won’t hold against you. Run by DJ Tom Loud, Hot Dub is a one-man show, which travels across the UK, hosting a series of sell-out events.
The big selling point of Hot Dub Time Machine is the ‘time machine’ part of the event. In layman’s terms, the music is played chronologically, ranging from the 50s to the current day. This means the best hits of all the decades are played throughout the night. The variety of songs is incredibly diverse as well, ranging from Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper to the theme song from Friends. Personally my favourite of the night was the Michael Jackson medley, but honestly the range was superb. What was amazing was that every song seemed to bleed onto the next so subtly and so superbly that there was barely a moment where you could take a break from dancing.
The one negative thing that I can say about the night is it was incredibly claustrophobic. I’m not sure if they sold more than the usual amount of tickets, or just more people showed up because Hot Dub is such a big deal but the room was completely packed. This meant that everyone was hot and sweaty and the crowd was effectively moshing unintentionally. One girl even passed out and had to be carried out of the room. While I was lucky and found an edge section with a tiny pocket of space there were plenty of people who complained that they didn’t have room to properly dance and move around. Maybe they could have just had maybe 100 or so less people to make the event more enjoyable for those who came. I know it would have cut into profits but it’s hard to imagine the night wouldn’t still have been a success.
However, even if it was packed it still ended up being an amazing night. I think you’d have a hard time not enjoying yourself if you came and if you missed out, well, better luck next time!
