After three successful years, the fashion show season continues with the return of Catwalk 2019. This year, the sell-out event is co-directed by Amy Sutlieff and Letitia O’Neill. The theme is Perception, coming from the surreal in the everyday life.
“We wanted to incorporate the fantastical into the everyday,” Ms. Sutlieff said.
Ms. O’Neill is currently an art history student, and explained to me the creative backdrop of the upcoming event.
“It came from the collaboration of the surrealist art movement and fashion, and when we put forward our proposal it was with sort of this lean towards surrealism, but we found that with the word ‘perception’ we could give all our team creative autonomy.”
Catwalk prides itself on being an inclusive event that nurtures potential and celebrates talent. Catwalk is there to provide an opportunity for those who want to get involved in fashion or just experience a group dynamic within the St Andrews scene.
“When we sat down and thought about the legacy of our co-direction, we said we wanted to be inclusive and accessible,” Ms. O’Neill stated.
Ms. Sutleiff added, “We want people to feel a part of family, comfortable. It’s okay if you’ve never walked, we really prize enthusiasm and a heart for charity. We wanted to give people an opportunity to grow.”
The heart of Catwalk, however, remains its dedication to charity. One hundred per cent of the proceeds are donated. None of the proceeds go back into the show, meaning each committee starts from scratch with every new season. The show will be donating to three charities on an international, national, and local scale. In association with the University of St Andrews Charities Campaign, Catwalk 2019 will be staged in support of: Medicines Sans Frontières, The Wave Project, and Fife Women’s Aid. There will also be a separate private charity speaker event, held on 6 March, where representatives from each charity will be invited to speak.
The event will be held at the Union on 9 March. Come out for some classic St Andrews fashion fun, and for multiple great causes!
