From 2019-20, Gannochy House will be offering self-catered accommodation for 58 of their 75 rooms, in response to the closure of Albany Park.
Before closure, Albany Park was the cheapest option for student accommodation, offering self-catered single rooms with shared bathrooms.
A University spokesman said, “The closure of Albany Park in November 2018 resulted in the loss of 330 affordable self-catered standard rooms.
“To compensate for this reduction in our building stock and while the Albany Park redevelopment is being carried out, we have offered under-graduate students who want to live in town rooms in Gannochy House to be offered on a self-catered basis, on a reduced rate.”
However, complaints have been made by St Salvator’s Hall and Gannochy House administration, firstly about the lack of communication from Residential and Business Services (RBS)about this change.
Bea Ley, senior student of St Salvator’s Hall, told The Saint about her disappointment that the wardennial team and hall committee were not told of the change until it was publicised. She said, “with RBS, you don’t learn anything unless it’s through gossip”.
Additionally, Ms Ley expressed her concerns about the relation-ship between St Salvator’s Hall and Gannochy. She noted how in the past, tension and hostility had been rife between the two halls, with a fight even breaking out two years ago during a foot-ball match.
However, according to Ms Ley, the relationship has improved hugely over the last two years, with more Gannochy residents on the committee.
There is now a worry that the new changes will create a bigger divide be-tween the two buildings, as Gannochy House won’t be using the catering facilities in Sallies as they currently do.
A University spokesman respond-ed to concerns saying, “this mixed offering within a residence has already been trialled in University Hall with the opening of Whitehorn Hall as a mixed self-catered/catered community and is very popular.
“We believe that this more flexible offer for the student community of St Salvator’s Hall/Gannochy House will work equally well.”
