Four ways to spice up popcorn for the perfect Netflix binge

100g popcorn – microwave or stove top
250g caster sugar
100ml water
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp of coarse sea salt

a)    First make your popcorn. I like to make popcorn on the stove with popping kernels and sunflower oil but you can also opt for microwaveable salted popcorn if you don’t have time.

b)   To prep, line a baking tray with baking paper and turn the oven on to 130 degrees.

c)    Next, coat a large mixing bowl with spray on cooking oil which will prevent the caramel from sticking later.

d)   To make the caramel add 250g caster sugar and 100ml water to a saucepan on the stove.

e)    Set the burner to a medium-low heat and simmer until the sugar and water has become a golden brown colour.

f)     When you see that the sugar is golden, add two tablespoons of room temperature butter and immediately turn off the heat and remove the sugar from the stove.

g)   Pour the caramel sauce onto the popcorn, coating evenly by tossing the popcorn in the bowl.

h)   Add the sea salt now so that it sticks to the popcorn.

i)     While the caramel popcorn is still hot, transfer it to the baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.

j)     Take the popcorn out of the oven and let it cool.

2 tsp garlic paste
2 tbsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley
1/3 cup grated parmesan
4 tbsp of butter

a)    Melt the butter in a small sauce pan.

b)   Add the garlic and parsley to the butter and cook on a low heat for another two minutes until the flavours are combined.

c)    Pour the garlic butter over the popcorn and add the grated parmesan.

d)   Toss the popcorn and enjoy!



4 tbsp of melted butter
1 tsp Cajun seasoning
½ tsp mild chili powder
½ tsp smoked paprika
3 tsp salt
Juice of half of a lime and the zest of a whole lime

a)    Pour the melted butter and lime juice over the popcorn and toss.

b)   Add the seasoning and lime zest and toss again to coat evenly.



200g dark chocolate
3 tsp salt
Dried cranberries or cherries

a)    Line a baking tray with baking paper and spread the plain popcorn on the tray.

b)   Melt the chocolate in the microwave or over the stove until it can be poured easily.

c)    Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn and add the dried berries and salt.

d)   Place in the fridge or freezer until the chocolate has set.
