The campaign to elect St Andrews’ 53rd Rector officially began at 12:01 AM this morning.
Both candidates have now launched Facebook pages and began efforts to attract students.
Willie Rennie, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and MSP for North East Fife, posted on his newly launched page saying, “Thanks so much for supporting the campaign – I’m really excited to be running to be the next Rector of St Andrews!
“I’ve been representing people in the St Andrews community for years, and I’d be so grateful for the opportunity to work for St Andrews students, representing your interests on the University Court.
“I really think we can make a difference in this community by working together.
“Keep an eye out for updates soon! – Willie”
Srdja Popovic, the Serbian political activist who helped lead a student movement to depose the dictator Milosevic in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s, also thanked his supporters.
“Thank you all for your support. Please like and follow this page for more information about my vision for St Andrews, and how I hope to make a difference as Rector,” he said.
He went on to add, “Big announcements are coming soon, but for now, here’s a meme -Srdja.”
Voting will open next Thursday 12 October and continue until Friday 13 October.
