Dead whale washes up on West Sands

A dead whale has washed up on West Sands beach.

Reports of the dead whale, possibly thought to be a minke, first appeared on the ‘Overheard in St Andrews’ group. Julie Seymor posted a picture of the whale, writing, “Overseen down the west sands: dead whale, almost 7 metres long.”

The whale was understood to have been washed up near the River Eden at the other end of the beach from St Andrews.

Efforts to remove the whale have now begun.

A team of specialists from the Scottish Marine Stranding Scheme are travelling down from Inverness to examine the body of the whale to ascertain how it died.
