A St Andrews professor has been awarded the prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh’s senior prize and medal for his work in increasing public engagement with academic research.

Professor Andrew Whiten is a Wardlaw Professor of Psychology and Professor of Evolutionary and Developmental Psychology. His work in increasing engagement includes founding the Living Links to Human Evolution research centre at Edinburgh Zoo. This centre encourages zoo visitors to participate in activities and to watch live science experiments. Over 25,000 people have visited the centre since it opened in 2008.

He has also taken part in the TalkScience outreach programme in Irvine Bay, speaking to pupils at St Matthews Academy to inspire them to pursue a career in science. Professor Whiten said: “I’ve been fortunate to have a wonderful team working with me who have done wonders sharing their enthusiasm and expertise with the public.”
