50 per cent of all the businesses in Scotland are based at home, according to new research published jointly by the universities of St Andrews and Glasgow.

The study detailed that home businesses account for one in five of all private sector jobs and have a turnover of £19.7 billion each year.

Dr Darja Reuschke, a lecturer at the School of Geography and Geosciences at the University, said: “These are serious businesses, accounting for 10 per cent of private sector turnover and 17 per cent of private sector employment.”
