Contentious restaurant approved

Greyfriars Gardens is set to welcome a controversial new arrival, the Q Restaurant and Smokehouse, which will be replacing the Coffee House café.

The Fife Licensing Board recently approved changes to the license of the property, despite being met by nine public objections.

The proposal for the new restaurant has caused much concern among residents, who claim it will create an outlet for both noise and antisocial behaviour. Many fear that such an establishment could harm the quiet nature of the street if it became a hub for St Andrews’ students. It is feared that it is likely to become more reminiscent of a pub than a restaurant.

However, it has to be considered whether the addition of the restaurant will make much of a difference to a street mostly inhabited by students. With Greyfriars Gardens being on the doorstep of the Union and The Vic as well as central to the town itself, footfall is already high in both the daytime and evenings.

The Q Restaurant and Smokehouse is scheduled to open in November.
